HEADED TO ATLANTA

I'm going to Atlanta tomorrow to the annual Catalyst convention for young leaders sponsored by John Maxwell's Injoy group. The crowd is primarily comprised of young men and women thirty-five years my junior. However, I go because I want to see what's working for some who are not Church of Christ. And, 60 is still young compared to a lot of older folks.

I learn a lot from our guys and continually reap the rewards of great speakers among us. But, it's good for me to hear a little of what else is going on. Catalyst has emphasis on cultural shifting and I want to try to keep up. Andy Stanley, Erwin McManus, and Donald Miller top my list of highly challenging speakers.

In thinking about really good motivational or instructional speakers/teachers of our past, it occurs to me that I've heard a few my kids will never enjoy as I did. The speakers were maybe in their prime when my kids were little. And, what speakers did I miss because I had not yet been converted?

Here are some of the best speakers I know of today...not necessarily in any specific order:
  • Craig Hicks
  • Marvin Phillips
  • Mike Cope
  • Randy Harris
  • Rick Atchley
  • Jim McGuiggan

Here are some of the best speakers of the past...some have passed on and others I just haven't heard in years:

  • Charles Coil
  • Jimmy Allen
  • Charles (the guy from the Banks of Onion Creek that everyone loved...but I can't think of his name)
  • Richard Rogers
  • Mid McKnight

We have been blessed over the years with very good, effective servants who preached/taught. List some you have in mind that we may have forgotten over the years. I feel sure some I will never have heard of. My loss. And, share a few names of the new up-and-coming speakers who you find to be extremely powerful.

Amen to Craig Hicks ... he'd make my list too.

Several names come to mind, but the two at the top of my list are: Mike Root - He preached at the church I attended growing up. I wish that I had appreciated him more.
Jim Woodruff - he had a profound effect on so many Harding students.
Others I would include are:
Jim Howard
Dave Bland
Evertt Huffard

Bill Goodpasture -THE best preacher in the brotherhood bar none! Heck, the best period!

Terry Rush

And Terry, I agree with you...those from the past...I have been blessed to hear all mentioned and many others. We have been blessed.

Was that Charles Hodge?

I would agree, Terry, though lately Cope has positioned himself politically in ways that leave me less than impressed.

Wow, where to begin? Probably no one has had a bigger impact on my life than Marvin Phillips. So, beginning with Marvin, I'll list, in no particular order:

Richard Rogers (the workshop will never be the same to me without him)

Alan Bryan (he was the 1st speaker I heard at the 1st workshop)

Albert Hill

Mid McKnight

Ira North (this generation of preachers has missed a real treat by not knowing him)

Terry Rush (the best thing you've ever said to me was 'friend')

Rubel Shelly & Mike Cope (are they the same person? you never see them together!)

Randy Harris

Jeff Walling

Charles Hodge

I am sure I've left off many, but that's a start. Isn't it amazing how many influence us as we make our journey?

first of all where to begin there are obviously several in the church of Christ that are close to my heart. I'll never forget when I was baptized at the workshop and Walling was speaking. Growing up at Memorial it was always a treat to have a preacher like Terry week in and week out. When I moved to Texas having Rick Atchley as our preacher every sunday was awesome!
But for me as a youth minister no one speaks more to me than Mike Yaconelli did. He was the founder of Youth Specialties which is THE source for Youth Ministry. Other than him I love T.D. Jakes no one came make a text come to life like he can and I also love Efrem Smith and Ed Young

Yes, Charles "Onion Creek" is Charles Hodge; I just heard him Tuesday (or Wed) this week at Harding's Lectureship.

I am surprised not to see Landon Saunder's on anyone's list! He tops mine.

It is hard to choose because what do we mean by "best"? Some of the ones mentioned in other comments were effective speakers but rank secterians. Is there anyone more effective than Leroy Garrett, Dwain Evans, Randy Harris or Bob Russell? Praise the Lord that Christ is preached period and that God is glorified.
